Indonesian unicorn Tokopedia appoints former chief of central bank Agus Martowardojo as president commissioner. Prior to his role as the governor of Bank Indonesia, Agus was also the Minister of Finance and president director of the country’s largest lender Bank Mandiri. And during his period on those position Agus has received respective recognitions including The Best Central Bank Governor in Asia Pacific by Global Markets in 2017; Finance Minister of the Year from The Banker in 2012; and Asia’s Best Executive from AsiaMoney in 2006.
CEO and Co-Founder of Tokopedia William Tanuwijaya says in a statement that Agus join in as the company enters a new growth-phase and developing its ecosystem to be infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS).
“Pak Agus’ experience and capacity is very valuable for Tokopedia to be a world-class technology company,” says William.
“I see Tokopedia is very consistent in empowering the society through technology so that Indonesia could grow stronger, balanced and sustainable. I am happy to join with Tokopedia and contribute my experience to support the company’s objective towards the development of inclusive economy,” Agus says.
Besides Agus, another former banker and minister that teamed with tech startup company in its board is Gita Wirjawan. Gita, who was Chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board and Minister of Trade, is one of the board of commissioners at fintech company OnlinePajak.
